The $200,000 raised was impressive, but Watt had bigger plans in store. That same day, he raised the goal to $500,000. Once again, people quickly responded and met that goal within 24 hours.

So once again, J.J. Watt challenged us all by raising the goal to $1 million.

America Comes Together

As a Houston native, Tennesse Titans Owner Amy Adams Strunk donated one million dollars to the fund out of her own pocket.

From there, the charity really started to take off once Ellen DeGeneres announced that she and Wal-Mart would contribute an additional $1 million to the fund. Once Ellen gets involved, there’s no stopping her.

Difficult Times Bring Out The Best In Humanity

Before long, J.J. Watt took to Twitter to exclaim “10 MILLION!!! Absolutely incredible. The most difficult times bring out the best in humanity.” Before the donation was made public, Watt said that more than 75,000 people contributed to the fund. He also ensured donations would go to the people who needed it most.

J.J. Watt’s fundraising had an obvious effect on the city of Houston, but perhaps even more importantly, it’s inspired other NFL players to follow in his footsteps…
